Tass Paxinos

Anastasios (Tass) Paxinos joined the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group as a partner in 2001. He died unexpectedly on October 6, 2005.

Tass came to the group with a well developed specialty interest in Shoulder and Elbow surgery. Having completed his Orthopaedic training in Victoria in 1995, Tass worked as a locum surgeon in Melbourne for 12 months before embarking on a series of internationally recognised fellowships. These were undertaken at Exeter and Oxford in the UK, Salzburg in Austria, and in Sydney, Australia. Whilst at St George hospital in Sydney, Tass described and published a test for assessing the
AC joint now recognised as ‘the Paxinos Test’.

Also whilst in Sydney, Tass accepted a position as lecturer with the University of New South Wales, and this reflected the importance of teaching for Tass. Throughout his career Tass devoted much time and energy to teaching at all levels, and until his death was co-ordinator of the upper limb teaching for the Victorian Orthopaedic training program.

In addition to his private practice, Tass worked as a Visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at Dandenong Hospital and also travelled to Kilmore Hospital.

Tass married in 1994 and was a devoted and loving husband and father to 3 sons and a daughter. As well as a keen interest in cycling and swimming, Tass had rowed at interstate and intervarsity level, and had also coached the Scotch College rowing crew.

Tass brought a quiet confidence and clarity of thought to everything that he did - including his practise of orthopaedic surgery. His interpersonal skills, sense of humour, and surgical expertise endeared him to all at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group and beyond. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

Vale.
